Philéole

Energy & BuildingsScope 2

Philéole designs and builds silent vertical-axis mini wind turbines in recycled and bio-sourced materials, as single units for masts and street lights or as modular wind walls for company rooftops.

About Philéole

Philéole was founded in Belgium in 2014 around a simple idea: the wind blows everywhere, in town as at sea, so it can be turned into electricity right where it is used. Its name joins the Greek philos, friend, and Aeolus, master of the winds, hence its motto “make the wind your friend”. The first prototypes were tested in the wind tunnels of the University of Liège, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the von Karman Institute, and the first product was a mast-head turbine for sailboats. Today the team, based in Wavre, offers three ranges: Sailing, with the Grain Blanc turbine for yachts; Building, with wind walls for company roofs and sites that are hard to connect to the grid; and Public Utility, with turbines that power street lights. The rotor design is patented in Europe and the blades are made of Greenfib®, a material from recycled textiles, or of recycled and recyclable polypropylene, with recyclable aluminium, and produced in Belgium and France. Philéole holds the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution label, first awarded in 2021 and renewed in 2025, and is a laureate of The Arch call for 100 European solutions for the planet.

What Philéole has delivered

Luxembourg AirportAirports

54 wind walls for an airport roof

To help decision-makers picture the project, Philéole first set up a demonstration wind wall on site. After that presentation, Luxembourg Airport chose to equip its roof with 54 Philéole wind walls made of GreenFib, a bio-sourced and recyclable material, in a natural brown that matches the building’s architecture. Installation was scheduled to start in November 2025.

Bio-sourced turbines for sustainable catamarans

In 2024 the La Rochelle catamaran builder adopted Philéole’s bio-sourced vertical turbines for its sustainable catamarans. Riveted to the mast at the chosen height and connected through a hybrid regulator, possibly together with a solar panel, the turbine keeps the onboard batteries charged at sea and in port, silently and without vibration.
