Two funded routes

The 2026 edition widened what it pays for.

You pick one route in the application form. Most non-profits that have never measured start with the carbon footprint.

Track A

Carbon footprint, scopes 1, 2 and where relevant 3

The default route if you have never measured. A full emissions baseline plus an action plan with concrete measures to cut CO₂. This is what tapio delivers, on the platform, with a carbon expert alongside your team.

Track B

Broader ecological footprint, new in 2026

If you have already measured your carbon, or if your main impact sits elsewhere, the 2026 call also funds an analysis covering biodiversity, circular economy, waste, water and mobility, with its own action plan.

Why now

Carbon and cash are the same conversation for a non-profit.

Your energy bills went up. Your budget did not.

Heating, electricity, fuel and freight now eat into what you can actually spend on your mission. Without measurement, you are cutting blind.

Funders and public authorities now ask for proof.

Grant files, calls for projects and partnerships increasingly require carbon figures. An intention is no longer enough, a measured baseline is.

Nobody on the team has time to become a carbon expert.

Small teams, many hats. The rules ask you to name one available contact person, not to build in-house expertise. We do the rest with them.

A carbon footprint looks expensive for a non-profit.

That is exactly what this call solves. The National Lottery covers 90% of the consultant invoice, so the remaining cost is a fraction of the savings you identify.

New in 2026

A carbon report that cuts your bills, not just your emissions.

Most eco-coaching ends with a report and a list of good intentions. tapio ends with a costed short-list. Our solution matchmaker connects your emission hotspots to concrete providers, and prices every lever in avoided tonnes, in cost and in payback. A direct effect on your budget.

  • 115 vetted decarbonisation solutions in the tapio marketplace
  • Energy, mobility, buildings, purchasing and waste levers, ranked by impact
  • Each lever shown in tonnes of CO₂e avoided, in cost and in return on investment

STROOM Festival, a nomadic classical music festival that measured its carbon footprint with tapio

Proof

STROOM expected waste. The data said visitor mobility.

STROOM Festival used the eco-coaching subsidy to run its first carbon footprint with tapio. It expected materials and waste to dominate. Visitor mobility turned out to be its main emission category, and became a priority the following year. That is what a measured baseline changes: you stop spending effort on the wrong thing.

"Despite the initial challenges of data collection, the tapio team was always there to answer our questions and support us through the process."

Nina Lambrecht, STROOM Festival

How to apply

Three steps, and the order matters.

Files are handled in chronological order until the €150,000 is gone, so the organisations that had their quote ready before 9 September are the ones that get funded.

1

Scope the project with us, before you file

Thirty minutes is enough to size the work and put a fixed quote in your hands. You need that figure to complete the form properly, and you need it before the call opens.

2

File your application with the National Lottery

The form is on the National Lottery calls for projects platform, and it names your consultant. Eligible files get a quick answer, first come, first served, until the €150,000 is allocated.

3

Start once your file is in, not before

The rules are strict: the audit may only begin after the application is filed, and only invoices dated after that count. You then have twelve months from the grant letter to finish.

Who can apply

  • A Belgian public or private legal entity pursuing a non-profit purpose: asbl/vzw, cooperative recognised as a social enterprise, or public-interest foundation, active on Belgian territory
  • Legal personality held for at least one full accounting year at the time of application
  • One available contact person to work with the consultant, and a declaration that management and the governing body back the application
  • Public institutions, municipalities and CPAS/OCMW are excluded from this call

Good to know

  • The National Lottery list of consultants is indicative. You may propose your own provider, so you can name tapio.
  • Eligible costs are consultancy, data collection and analysis, the report and the action plan. Internal staff time, your travel and recoverable VAT are not.
  • No double funding: these costs cannot be covered by another public or private subsidy.
  • Payment comes on one invoice, the proof of payment and the audit report using the National Lottery template.

Do not fill in the form on your own.

We go through it with you, quote included, so your file is complete on the day the call opens.

Questions

Carbon footprint for non-profits, answered.

What is the National Lottery eco-coaching call for projects?

It is a support scheme for Belgian non-profits that want to measure their environmental impact and reduce it. The National Lottery refunds 90% of the consultant invoice, up to €6,000 per organisation, whatever the number of sites audited. The 2026 edition is the third, runs from 9 September to 22 October 2026 at 12:00, and has a total budget of €150,000, around 25 organisations at the ceiling.

What is the deadline, and is it worth applying late?

The formal deadline is 22 October 2026 at 12:00, but the call closes as soon as the €150,000 is allocated. Eligible files are processed in chronological order of submission, so the real deadline is the day the budget runs out. In practice, apply in the first days of the window.

How much does a carbon footprint cost a non-profit in practice?

With this subsidy you pay 10% of the consultant invoice, with the National Lottery covering the rest up to €6,000. The exact price depends on your size and the activities to cover. We give you a fixed quote before you file, so you know your remaining cost upfront. Internal staff time, your own travel and recoverable VAT are not eligible costs.

Which organisations are eligible?

Belgian public or private legal entities pursuing a non-profit purpose and active in Belgium: asbl/vzw, cooperatives recognised as social enterprises, and public-interest foundations. You must have held legal personality for at least one full accounting year. Public institutions, municipalities and CPAS/OCMW are explicitly excluded, and each organisation may file only one application.

Can we choose tapio as our consultant?

Yes. The National Lottery publishes a list of consultants, but the rules state that this list is indicative and that organisations may propose another provider. You name your consultant in the application form. tapio has already run carbon footprints for non-profits funded by this programme, including STROOM Festival.

Does a carbon footprint really cut our energy bills?

It does when the report ends in a costed action plan rather than a PDF. Energy is both an emission source and a line in your accounts, so most reduction levers on heating, electricity, equipment and mobility also cut spending. tapio prices each lever in avoided tonnes, in cost and in payback, so you can start with the ones that pay for themselves.

Can we combine this with another subsidy?

No, not on the same costs. The rules forbid any other public or private funding for the expenses covered here, and double funding can lead the National Lottery to refuse or reclaim the support. Costs carried by another donor simply cannot be reimbursed under this call.

How long does it take and how much of our time does it need?

Count a few weeks between the kick-off and the final report, mostly driven by how fast the data comes in, and you have twelve months from the grant letter to finish. Your side of the work is collecting invoices and activity data, and we do that with you: a shared collection plan, ready-made forms and a carbon expert who answers your questions along the way.

Which methodology do you use?

GHG Protocol, ISO 14064 and the Bilan Carbone methodology, with over 14,000 emission factors from ADEME, DEFRA, EPA and Ecoinvent. Every factor is sourced, dated and traceable in your report, so it holds up in front of a funder or an auditor. We also complete the National Lottery reporting template required for payment.

Can we redo the carbon footprint next year?

Yes, and that is the point. Your data stays in tapio, so the second year is far quicker than the first and you can measure what your actions actually changed. Non-profits like STROOM Festival run the exercise again to track their progress year on year.

Next step

Let's talk. 30 minutes, and your file is ready to send.

We scope your carbon footprint, give you a fixed quote and prepare your eco-coaching file, so you can apply in the first days of the window rather than fight for what is left of the budget. No obligation, and no jargon.
