N-SIDE

Energy & BuildingsAdvisory & Training

N-SIDE is a Belgian deeptech company from Louvain-la-Neuve that builds optimisation and AI software for electricity markets, power grids and clinical supply chains. Its algorithms clear Europe's day-ahead electricity market and help grid operators integrate more renewables, while its life sciences tools cut drug waste in clinical trials.

About N-SIDE

N-SIDE was founded in 2000 and is based in Louvain-la-Neuve, with offices in Cambridge (Massachusetts) and Tokyo. It employs more than 200 people of more than 30 nationalities and serves clients in more than 20 countries across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. The company works in two fields: energy, for power exchanges, transmission and distribution system operators and market participants, and life sciences, for pharmaceutical companies, biotechs, CROs and CDMOs. Its PCR EUPHEMIA algorithm has cleared the European single day-ahead electricity market since 2014 and now covers 27 countries; its Power Matching Algorithm sets day-ahead prices in Japan and India, where N-SIDE estimates that efficient markets enable an annual reduction of 57,000 tons of CO₂. Grid clients include NESO, TenneT, Elia, Swissgrid, Statnett, Energinet and the Baltic TSOs. In life sciences, N-SIDE reports optimising clinical trial supply chains for 1 in 3 medications marketed globally. N-SIDE is a certified B Corp, holds an EcoVadis Silver rating, ISO 27001 and ISO 14001 certifications, and has a partnership with Tapio alongside its SBTi commitments.

What N-SIDE has delivered

SSEN TransmissionElectricity transmission

Year-ahead outage planning optimised for a UK transmission operator

With more renewables on its network, SSEN Transmission's outage planning had become more volatile: planners had to manage a high volume of changes by hand, trading off work delivery against network disruption. In a proof of concept funded through Ofgem's Network Innovation Allowance, N-SIDE built a Year-Ahead Outage Optimiser that automatically validates plans, generates a compliant schedule with multi-objective optimisation and finds the least disruptive slot for ad hoc requests. Run on 12 months of historical data, it scheduled 99.5% of work requests with 34% fewer outages. SSEN Transmission's own close-down report estimates £5.7 million in lifetime savings and cut year-ahead response times from one hour to ten minutes in the latest trials.

JEPXPower exchange

Two years of reliable price setting on Japan's day-ahead electricity market

As Japan moves towards renewables and electrification, the Japan Electric Power Exchange needed a clearing engine that could handle more participants and new bid types without losing speed or stability. JEPX deployed N-SIDE's Power Matching Algorithm, already proven in European and Indian markets, to set day-ahead prices and volumes in a closed-gate auction. N-SIDE keeps adding order types and performance improvements. After two years of uninterrupted daily operation, the algorithm has determined prices with 100% reliability since launch and handles traded volumes of over 800 GWh in recent months, while complex bids give renewable producers more flexibility.

A shared balancing capacity market for the Baltic grid

To disconnect from the Soviet-era BRELL ring and join the European grid, the Baltic transmission operators needed their own balancing mechanism, aligned with EU rules, while coping with low grid inertia and HVDC flows larger than any single country's reserves. With Navitasoft, N-SIDE delivered the Baltic Balancing Capacity Market platform. Its dimensioning algorithm sets reserve needs every day using probabilistic and deterministic methods, and its Power Matching Algorithm co-optimises FCR, aFRR and mFRR procurement so that one megawatt of reserve can cover several control areas. The platform went live in February 2025 and has run without issues since, lowering procurement costs through cross-border reserve sharing.

  • Independent grid balancing for the synchronisation of the Baltic states with Continental Europe
  • Daily, co-optimised procurement of FCR, aFRR and mFRR
  • Live since February 2025 without issues

PCR power exchanges (European single day-ahead coupling)Power exchanges

EUPHEMIA, the algorithm that clears Europe's day-ahead electricity market

Without market coupling, traders must buy electricity and cross-border capacity separately, which splits markets and wastes transmission capacity. On behalf of the power exchanges of the Price Coupling of Regions project, N-SIDE developed PCR EUPHEMIA, the market-clearing algorithm for European single day-ahead coupling. Every day it allocates energy and cross-zonal capacity and computes prices across 27 countries, solving problems with hundreds of thousands of orders in less than 17 minutes. Launched in 2014, it has run since then, and N-SIDE keeps evolving it through the EUPHEMIA Lab, with flow-based modelling and 15-minute market time units.

Less drug waste and no stock-outs on a high-priority clinical trial

On a high-priority study, CSL Behring's clinical supply managers needed to be ready for the unexpected without over-producing drugs. Working with N-SIDE's strategic consulting team, they ran risk-based optimisation and simulated outcomes for several scenarios in advance, then followed the trial with N-SIDE monitoring dashboards that compare real-time data with the supply forecast by country and depot. When enrolment rose above the highest forecast, the team could react quickly with figures in hand. The approach reduced drug waste, avoided stock-outs that could have meant a missed patient treatment, and freed time for other work.

  • Drug waste reduced on a high-priority study
  • No stock-outs, even when enrolment exceeded the highest forecast
  • Real-time monitoring by country and depot
