About Alice Escallier
Alice Escallier has worked as an independent sustainability consultant since September 2022. She is a graduate engineer from ESPCI Paris and Mines ParisTech, where she specialised in innovation and entrepreneurship. Before going freelance, she worked in start-ups: as right hand to the CEO of Reconcil (returnable takeaway packaging), in fruit, vegetable and herb procurement at HelloFresh, and as Head of Supply Chain at Lovebox. She has been certified in the Bilan Carbone® method by the ABC since January 2024, is an SBTi Certified Expert, a B Leader trained to support B Corp certification, ACT Step-by-Step certified and a facilitator of the Fresque de l'Économie Circulaire. She works with companies of all sizes, in particular in manufacturing and agrifood, and has completed more than 10 CDP questionnaires. Proving that a reusable steel container beats single-use packaging in mass catering
Eternity Systems runs a cleaning service for reusable food containers and wanted to show that its system has a lower impact than the single-use packaging common in the food industry. Alice Escallier framed a comparative cradle-to-grave LCA on the 16 PEF impact categories, following ADEME recommendations. It covered the raw materials and manufacture of the containers, transport to the central kitchen, delivery by truck to school canteens and the cleaning centre, washing and end of life, compared with single-use polypropylene packaging. Detailed results are confidential; the study concluded that the steel containers become better for the climate than single-use PP packaging after 21 uses.
Choosing where to make a board game, based on its carbon footprint
Tailemi makes its board game "Mamie Moule Maki" partly in Poland and partly in China, and was weighing a move of production to Europe or entirely to China. Alice Escallier ran a cradle-to-gate LCA, plus transport to the logistics provider, on climate change, and compared 5 scenarios: the current set-up with plastic parts flown in from China, the same with sea freight, full production in Poland, assembly in France with plastic parts shipped from China, and full production in China shipped by sea. Because Poland and China have very similar electricity mixes, the place of production made little difference: the main gap came from transport and the mode used. Tailemi received a side-by-side comparison of the 5 scenarios to support its decision.
