Vanheede Environment Group

Waste & CircularScope 3

Vanheede Environment Group is a Belgian family-owned waste management and recycling group. It collects, sorts and treats more than 3,000 business waste streams and turns them into new raw materials and green energy in its own plants, for companies of every size in Belgium, Luxembourg and northern France.

About Vanheede Environment Group

Vanheede's story starts in 1968, when Herwig Vanheede and Claudette Descamps left the declining flax trade to go into waste management. Still a family business led by CEO David Vanheede and headquartered in Geluwe (Wervik), the group now employs 1,163 people across 20 branches in Belgium, Luxembourg and France and serves nearly 20,000 clients. Each year it collects, sorts and treats 1,349,944 tonnes of waste, of which 94.7% is recycled or recovered, and produces 688,030 tonnes of new raw materials and 78,526 MWh of green electricity. Its own plants include a material recovery facility in Rumbeke, plastic recycling at Vanheede Polymers & Compounds (RecyClass certified), a biogas plant and wind turbines at Quévy, and a landfill where about 95% of the gas is captured for energy. Vanheede is ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified, has been assessed by EcoVadis since 2018 and holds the Best Managed Companies label, at Platinum level since 2026. It measures its own carbon footprint under the GHG Protocol, with Greenfish, from a 2021 baseline.

What Vanheede Environment Group has delivered

Picanol GroupIndustry

Ten years of Total Waste Care at a loom maker

At Picanol's Ypres site, waste used to be handled by whoever had a forklift free, so nobody could say whether the plant complied with the law, paid the right price or how to split costs between departments. Since October 2009, Vanheede has run all waste streams under Total Waste Care: about 60 streams are sorted at source, two Vanheede men-on-site move some 1,000 small bins and 200 large ones to the recycling area, compact waste to cut trips and report every month, so costs can be broken down per department. Foundry sand from Proferro is handled separately and reused as construction material.

Recovering recyclables from PMD sorting residue

The residue left after Belgium's five PMD sorting centres still contains around 30 to 40% recyclable material, which used to go to incineration. Under a five-year contract with Fost Plus, Vanheede post-sorts around 35,000 tonnes of this residue a year from 2025. A new mixed industrial waste facility in Rumbeke, with a capacity of 100,000 tonnes, separates the real residue from the recyclables, then the existing PMD sorting line splits them into eight material flows for recycling. Vanheede invested 35 million euros in the project.

FluviusUtilities

Waste data in near real time for a grid operator

Fluvius, the Flemish grid operator, needed a waste policy that matched how the company is organised, and reporting it could rely on. Vanheede redrew the specifications around Fluvius' structure, giving a clear overview of the number and weight of containers along with improvement proposals. The team now uses myVanheede to check legal compliance and to file its annual environmental report, instead of spreadsheets that were always a month behind, and its health and safety committee and works council use the yearly waste volumes. Fluvius also piloted the Vanheede Plus app for on-the-spot collection requests.

  • Clear overview of containers and weights per site
  • Near real-time data for the annual environmental report
  • Goal to keep one more stream out of residual waste each year

Colruyt GroupRetail and agriculture

Turning a retailer's organic waste into fertiliser for its own fields

Colruyt Group owns farmland in Belgium and wants to keep it fertile without chemical fertiliser. Vanheede Biomass Solutions ferments Colruyt Group's organic waste at Quévy and returns it as digestate, a certified organic fertiliser. In one spring it delivered more than 1,000 m³ of digestate, spread on Colruyt Group's fields in Hainaut, closing the loop between the retailer's waste and its own crops.

  • Organic waste returned to farmland instead of being disposed of
  • Chemical fertiliser replaced by a certified organic product

Puyenbroeck provincial estateRecreation

95% pure PMD at a park with 450,000 visitors a year

The Puyenbroeck provincial estate covers 450 hectares and welcomes 450,000 visitors a year, with play areas, a campsite, golf and events, which makes sorting at source a real challenge. With Vanheede collecting its streams, the estate gave clear responsibilities to its staff, put a PMD bin next to every residual waste bin and added oil, fat and glass bins where needed. Each year PMD volumes rise and residual waste falls.

UMONSHigher education

One waste partner instead of three for a university

The University of Mons used to work with three companies, each collecting a different stream, which meant three times the follow-up and reporting. In a public tender that included quality criteria, it chose Vanheede for all streams from October 2018: PMD, paper and cardboard, residual waste, glass, wood, food and green waste across 40 buildings. Staff on each campus see the collection calendar directly in myVanheede, so the housing department no longer has to go through the environmental manager.

What customers say

“We hebben het gevoel dat we een partner aan boord hebben die weet wat hij doet en moet doen met ons afval. Maar ook iemand die meedenkt en ons helpt evolueren in de juiste richting. Zo is er bijvoorbeeld een doelstelling opgemaakt om jaarlijks één extra afvalstroom uit het restafval te weren.”
Greet Arens,Supply chain, waste reception and management operations, Fluvius
“Vanheede is onze partner voor de verwerking van gevaarlijke en niet-gevaarlijke stoffen. Duurzaamheid is voor Volvo zeer belangrijk. Wij zoeken steeds naar verbeteringen van onze processen, zodat onze afvalberg kleiner wordt. Het overgebleven materiaal willen we op de juiste manier laten verwerken, zodat het opnieuw gebruikt kan worden in industriële processen.”
Pascal Antoin,Country Manager, Non Automotive Purchasing, Volvo Group
“Les relations ont d'emblée été bonnes avec l’équipe Vanheede. Le service client a toujours pu me venir en aide, ce qui contribue à de bons rapports. Cette année, nous avons ajouté des critères de qualité au Cahier Spécial des Charges (CSC). Vanheede avait une longueur d'avance sur les autres.”
Alan Libert,Environmental manager, UMONS
