Timber Clay Floor

Timber Clay Floor

Procurement & SupplyScope 3

Timber Clay is a structural floor system developed by Compass Engineering, a structural engineering firm in Uccle (Brussels). It combines timber with a cement-free clay screed that works structurally with the wood, as a bio-based alternative to concrete slabs and cement screeds.

About Timber Clay Floor

Timber Clay was developed by Compass Engineering, a structural engineering firm set up in 2021 in Uccle, Brussels, that works with bio-based materials and unusual structures. The idea came from two observations on housing projects: acoustics are usually solved by adding a cement screed, and CLT floors need large volumes of wood just to limit deflection. The team built a full-scale test site in Belgium in 2023 and ran laboratory tests on shear strength and shrinkage at Buildwise, the Belgian building research centre. It also carried out six-month bending tests under heavy load and filmed a full-scale test with a 6.85 m span. Partners shown on the project's site include Buildwise, ECAM, hub.brussels, Innoviris and Built Circular. In 2024, Timber Clay received a Totem award from Built Circular.
