Energy & BuildingsMobility & CommutingScope 1Scope 2

Smappee is a Belgian company from Harelbeke that makes smart EV chargers and energy management systems for homes, businesses and public infrastructure. Its platform measures every energy flow on a site and steers EV charging, solar, storage and other loads to use more on-site renewable energy and avoid costly peaks.

About Smappee

Smappee was founded in 2012 by Stefan Grosjean, who had earlier founded EnergyICT in 1991 and grown it into a worldwide supplier of energy management solutions for industrial and commercial companies, grid operators and utilities. Based in Harelbeke, West Flanders, Smappee designs smart EV chargers and energy management systems for homes, businesses and public infrastructure, and works through a network of certified installers. Its home base, Snowball, is an energy-neutral cleantech hub that produces its own solar power, stores it in a container-sized battery and runs fifty charging points, all managed by Smappee's own platform. Its products have won a Red Dot Best of the Best award (2024, for the EV line), iF Design Awards in 2021 and 2024, two Henry van de Velde awards and the Febeliec Energy Award 2018 for Smappee Infinity. Customers include ICO Terminals in Zeebrugge, DPD Ireland, WWF offices worldwide and the Dutch care group Rivas Zorggroep. For its own operations, Smappee has had its carbon footprint externally validated and targets net zero by 2030.

What Smappee has delivered

ICO TerminalsPort logistics

300+ charging connectors run as one energy system at a car import terminal

ICO Terminals in Zeebrugge, Europe's largest car import terminal, must charge a growing share of the electric vehicles it handles to an agreed level before they can be delivered. By 2019 it had over 300 slow chargers but no control: vehicles were over- or under-charged, surplus power could not be billed back to the car brands, there was no DC charging and no central view of the site's transformers, wind turbines and buildings. Smappee Infinity now measures and protects seven low-voltage boards and their transformers, with dynamic load balancing across the charging clusters and the site's eleven wind turbines included. Clusters of EV Base charge points and 200 kW EV Ultra fast chargers run on one platform, and an API link with ICO's system means each vehicle receives exactly the kilowatt-hours requested. Staff also get EV Wall chargers at home, with split billing.

DPD IrelandParcel delivery

Reliable overnight charging for an electric delivery fleet

DPD Ireland, the country's largest courier company with 36 depots, is moving its delivery vans from diesel to electric. Drivers would only buy in if every van was charged and ready each morning. From January 2022, installer EV Charging Ireland fitted Smappee EV Base and EV Wall chargers; fifteen months later, 200 Smappee chargers were in place, plus 20 home charging units. Each depot monitors its chargers in the Smappee dashboard, is notified when a session fails and keeps track of spending, and drivers who charge at home are reimbursed accurately each month using RFID cards. Within two years, 30% of the fleet was electric, with 300 electric vehicles on the road.

WWFNGO

Energy monitoring to cut office consumption across WWF's network

Through its WWF Upfront programme, launched in 2016, WWF makes its own offices more energy efficient and powers them with renewable energy, one office at a time. It needed monitoring that works in very different climates and that staff who are not energy experts can use. Each office installs a Smappee energy monitor, staff follow real-time consumption in the app during an Energy Efficiency Week, and the data is then used to size solar installations accurately. In Hanoi, the office found that air conditioning used 30% of its energy (50% in summer) and saved 28% over the week by changing air-conditioning habits and switching off appliances such as water dispensers at night; the Hue office cut its use by 50%.

Rivas ZorggroepHealthcare

One energy dashboard for 19 healthcare locations

Rivas Zorggroep is a non-profit healthcare group in the South Holland region of the Netherlands, with nineteen locations including the Beatrixziekenhuis regional hospital in Gorinchem. Dutch energy-saving rules required it to look closely at where it could reduce consumption, and cutting CO₂ emissions is its main priority. Smappee Infinity now gives it detailed energy data with Cascade Overload Protection and one dashboard covering all locations and departments. After discovering that Smappee also makes chargers, the group installed two charging stations for hospital staff and plans to add more.

  • One dashboard for all 19 locations and departments
  • Overload protection on the electrical installation
  • Two EV charging stations for hospital staff, with more planned

What customers say

“If there is no energy in a van it is of no use. We need complete faith in our charging system to ensure our vehicles can leave the depot every morning.”
Stephen Tummon,Sustainability Program Manager, DPD Ireland
“Nobody will let the tap run but they will leave the lights on even though it's the same. Energy use isn't tangible nor visible and so people don't save energy. Smappee is an easy way to offer insights in and control over your energy consumption.”
Jean-Philippe Denruyter,Manager for Applied Energy Solutions, WWF
