Shayp is a Brussels company that monitors water meters in real time and uses machine learning to spot leaks in buildings within hours. Building owners and facility teams get prioritised alerts, remote meter readings and a clear view of what each repair saves.
About Shayp
Shayp was founded in Brussels in 2017, after its founder, then energy manager for the City of Brussels, found a kindergarten where two basement leaks had been running for years unnoticed. The company is now led by co-founder and CEO Grégoire de Hemptinne, with co-founder Zineddine Wakrim behind the IoT hardware, and works with public bodies, universities, schools, care homes, housing operators and companies such as the City of Brussels, ING, SNCB, Lidl, ULB and VUB. Its POLY4 datalogger is assembled in Belgium, in Poperinge, and is 99% recyclable at the end of its 10-year battery life; its 2ZERO software handles leak alerts and meter readings. Shayp has been a certified B Corp since January 2022, received the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution label in January 2020, and was selected for the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator. Microsoft has signed a ten-year partnership with Shayp to deploy its water conservation technology in more than 600 schools and public buildings in Brussels and Paris, through the Shayp 4IMPACT platform.

Finding hidden leaks across 300 municipal buildings
The City of Brussels manages over 300 buildings, from historic sites, offices and stadiums to swimming pools, fountains, schools and kindergartens. Its plumbers could not check kilometres of pipes and hundreds of sanitary fittings by hand. Shayp now flags discrepancies on its own and tells operators which buildings need attention first. In one school where repeated alerts could not be traced, Shayp's leak-hunting partner found two toilets running constantly, four dripping taps and a faulty regeneration system. The city's energy team reports a 30% drop in water use compared with previous years.
Universities are prone to leaks: low occupancy at times, long and ageing plumbing. The Vrije Universiteit Brussel's sustainability team uses Shayp to track its buildings and now includes the technology in every new campus, where it has also caught leaks. On one Friday, Shayp's algorithm saw that consumption kept rising after cleaning hours and sent an alert for an 80 L/h leak. Plumbers found the faulty tap on Monday and fixed it on Tuesday.
Over 3 million litres a year saved across a Benelux office portfolio
ING runs a wide portfolio of buildings across the Benelux, each with its own property manager and maintenance team. Both have direct access to the Shayp web app and are notified when action is needed. Within 24 hours of going live, Shayp spotted a leak on a faulty boiler; a customer success manager helped locate it a few hours later. Once the parts arrived and the boiler was fixed, the building's water consumption dropped by 51%, even with a smaller leak still running elsewhere.
Scholengroep Impact, part of the GO! school network in the Torhout-Bruges-Knokke region, wanted a water monitoring system that was easy to install and reliable at spotting leaks. Over one weekend, a hidden leaking toilet ran at 800 L/h, 60% of the building's total consumption. Shayp sent an automatic alert and the school fixed it on Monday. In 2021, the sustainability team and field technicians saved about 30,000,000 litres across all monitored schools.
Remote meter readings and leak alerts for a spread-out care portfolio
Zorgbedrijf Meetjesland runs residential care centres and home care services across a large, spread-out portfolio. It started with Shayp to monitor water consumption remotely and read meter indexes digitally, then found that the analytics also saved a lot of water. A few weeks in, an alert showed consumption had tripled: the cause was a faulty water softener, a type of equipment prone to leaks and abnormal discharges.
The Belgian national railway company uses Shayp in its offices and train stations. In one case, its maintenance team was alerted to a 100 L/h leak. A Shayp customer success manager guided them through closing the main valves and a visual inspection, and they found and repaired a leaking toilet.
“Shayp has allowed us to identify and solve a critical problem that we did not know before. Startups such as Shayp are a necessity to address the issues of our future. The city of Brussels is proud to collaborate and support Shayp. Shayp has demonstrated a fairly spectacular return on investment. Whereas, when compared to conventional energy investments, returns are only initiated after several years.”

“Directly after the installation of the Shayp device we found a leak. On [the] moment we could see that the Shayp’s system worked (...) otherwise it would have taken a few days or even weeks to detect the leak.”
