Joule is a Ghent-based bike leasing company for employers, public bodies and the self-employed. Employees choose their bike online or at a local dealer, and Joule handles the lease, maintenance, insurance, roadside assistance and the HR admin.
About Joule
Joule was started by Laurens Verbeke, Jordy De Loose and Nicolas Coudeville after a mountain bike trip in Italy where they rode e-bikes and saw how practical they are. The company is based in Ghent and has offered tailored bike leasing to employers, the self-employed and employees since 2017. Its name refers to the unit of energy, and its mission is to improve commuting. Joule distributes bikes, organises maintenance and activates bike plans, with two service models: Joule Mobiel, where mobile technicians deliver and service bikes at home or at work, and Joule Lokaal, through a network of local dealers. It works with sector-specific schemes, including healthcare, transport, construction, the police and education. Joule counts more than 5,000 cyclists across more than 300 clients, from small SMEs to Telenet, Krëfel and GO! Scholengroep. Other clients shown on its site include PepsiCo, P&G, Novartis, Scania, D'Ieteren and Helan.

Bike leasing through the year-end bonus for school staff
Since January 2025, a change in the law lets education staff swap their year-end bonus for a bike lease. GO! seized the chance with Joule, which needed clear communication because leasing runs only through this flexible budget. Joule ran online webinars on bike leasing and the declaration of intent from December 2024, then webinars and test events with the school groups in spring and autumn 2025. Leases run for 36 or 48 months, and most staff ordered through Joule Lokaal, Gazelle being the favourite brand.
Helan chose Joule's all-in formula after a public tender, mainly for its flexibility: staff work across Flanders in very different jobs. Joule delivers and services bikes at home where needed, helped write the bike lease policy and adapted info sessions to each staff group. The launch ran fully online during the COVID period, with a single point of contact. The move of a head office in Ghent led several employees to swap the car for a lease bike.
Bike leasing with local dealers for a care organisation
Ter Heide, a care organisation with four campuses in Limburg, issued a tender for bike leasing for its 650 employees, partly to stand out as an employer. Being able to work with local bike shops was a key criterion, and the density of Joule's dealer network nearby was one of the deciding factors. Staff received simulations with different accessories, attended a test event and get after-sales support, for instance when a flat tyre is handled through the insurance.
More staff cycling to work thanks to an all-in lease
Vlaams & Neutraal Ziekenfonds (VNZ) was looking for a way to reward staff while supporting their health and the environment, and chose Joule in October 2022 after a long search. Spreading the cost through monthly pay lowered the threshold to choose an e-bike, and Joule comes to the office for maintenance. Partners Comfoplus and NZVL joined the project as well.
“Sinds we met Joule samenwerken zijn er veel meer werknemers die met de fiets naar het werk komen. De drempel om voor een elektrische te kiezen is veel lager bij fietsleasing doordat de kosten maandelijks via het loon worden gespreid.”
Joke de Mol,HR manager, Vlaams & Neutraal Ziekenfonds
“We zagen al een stijging in het aantal medewerkers dat met de fiets naar het werk kwam, en de opstart van de leasingformule met Joule gaf die stijging een boost.”
Kaat Van Hecke,HR Expert, Helan
“Het bleek duidelijk dat Joule een groot aantal dealers in onze nabije omgeving had. Samenwerken met Joule is heel aangenaam. Als we vragen stellen, krijgen we onmiddellijk een antwoord.”
