IsoHemp is a Belgian manufacturer of hemp and lime blocks for walls, partitions, floors and roofs in new build and renovation. One 100% bio-based block insulates, regulates moisture, absorbs sound and resists fire, and it is made in an automated factory in Fernelmont that recycles its offcuts and cleaning water.
About IsoHemp
IsoHemp was founded in 2011 by two engineers, Olivier Beghin and Jean-Baptiste de Mahieu, after meeting a Belgian researcher working on hemp for building. After a year of R&D and a year of small-scale production, industrial manufacturing started in 2013 in Fernelmont, in the province of Namur. The automated factory that opened in 2021 was developed in-house and can produce up to five million blocks a year. Solar panels cover 30% of its annual energy needs, production scraps go back into the process and cleaning water is recycled, so none is discharged into the sewer. Nearly 40 people worked at IsoHemp in 2023. The company sells through distributors in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Italy and beyond, opened a French branch in Troyes in 2022, and holds a technical approval (ATG) in Belgium and a general technical approval (ABZ) in Germany.
What IsoHemp has delivered
LidlRetail
A new Lidl store with hemp block walls
For its new store in La Gacilly, Brittany, Lidl chose 30 cm IsoHemp blocks laid as infill between reinforced concrete posts with the Syst'HEMP Building system, designed for large projects. Structural reinforcements were built into the blocks themselves with Syst'HEMP Pro, which kept the installation clean and fast on a site where deadlines could not slip. The facade is finished with lime render and timber cladding. IsoHemp reports a real energy gain, better comfort in summer and winter, and thermal and acoustic regulation above retail standards. Completed in 2025.
Fast, clean installation on a tight schedule
Insulation, thermal mass and acoustics in one wall
Bio-based envelope with lime render and timber cladding
For a new industrial building in Lentilly, near Lyon, built as part of a business expansion, the client wanted practical, economical volumes but also an envelope as environmentally neutral as possible and comfortable for employees. The building uses Syst'HEMP Pro 36 cm blocks: roof beams, columns and bracing walls were poured in concrete directly inside the blocks. Acoustics, both noise from outside and noise inside the workshop, weighed in the choice. A plastered Syst'HEMP Pro block has a 4-hour fire rating validated by the CSTB, and the high thermal inertia of the walls keeps the workplace comfortable in winter and summer.
The city of Fleurus needed a new tertiary building for its public works department: offices, staff rooms, workshops and garages. Designed by Igretec and built by De Graeve, it combines a reinforced concrete post-and-beam frame with hemp block insulation. The aim was a simple, efficient construction system that limits the site's environmental impact while giving future users good thermal and acoustic comfort. The light blocks also made installation easier. Completed in 2023.
In Mechelen, a former Rato factory was turned into a storage facility for the city's artworks and archives. Eight box-in-box storage rooms were built with 30 cm hemp block walls, 6 to 8 metres high, anchored to the existing steel structure and finished inside and out with IsoHemp's PCS coating. The hemp blocks keep the temperature constant and humidity regulated, the conditions needed to conserve archives and art. The project covers 1500 m² of block walls.
Insulating a Brussels factory turned art centre from the inside
The Atoma Art Center in Brussels is a former factory converted into a cultural and exhibition venue. Urban Nation Architects renovated the 3,600 m² building, including the 1,000 m² Constantin Chariot Space, and contractor Construnique lined the walls with 800 m² of IsoHemp blocks for interior insulation. The blocks improved energy efficiency, regulate heat and moisture, and dampen noise for a calm cultural venue, while respecting the existing structure. Completed in 2024.
The Gustave Eiffel University cafeteria serves hundreds of people every lunchtime in large, high spaces next to a busy commercial kitchen. Dialog Architecture and contractor Boisseau lined 230 m² of concrete block walls with 20 cm IsoHemp blocks, with a PCS coating and tiles in the sanitary areas for hygiene. IsoHemp reports clearer conversations and a lower overall noise level, and a stable indoor climate despite the heat from the kitchen. Completed in 2026.
“Le choix du bloc de chanvre repose essentiellement sur la nécessité de proposer un système constructif simple et efficace (approche « Low-tech »), et sur la volonté de limiter l’impact environnemental du chantier tout en garantissant un maximum de confort aux futurs utilisateurs.”
