ICEDD is an independent study and consulting institute in Namur that helps companies and public authorities with their transition to a more sustainable world. Its thirty or so experts carry out energy audits, carbon and energy balances, strategy and training on energy, climate, resources and mobility.

About ICEDD

ICEDD, the Institut de Conseil et d'Études en Développement Durable, is an independent study and consulting firm based on Boulevard Frère Orban in Namur. It has more than 50 years of experience in sustainable development and a team of about thirty experts covering a wide multidisciplinary field. It works for companies and public authorities on four themes: natural resources and waste, mobility and territory, climate and the energy transition, and sustainable buildings and industry. Its four lines of service are diagnostics and evaluation, transition support, foresight studies, and training and participation. Since 1980 it has produced the reference annual energy balance of Wallonia, and it has run the Facilitateur URE helpdesk for non-residential buildings and the Responsable Énergie training for the Walloon energy administration since 1997. Its clients include ArcelorMittal, Ahlstrom, SCA, FEVIA Wallonie, CSTC, Bruxelles Environnement, the Walloon Air and Climate Agency and the European Commission. ICEDD is ISO 9001:2015 certified and has joined the Walloon Green Deal on circular purchasing as a buyer and facilitator.

What ICEDD has delivered

AXA, Hotel Amigo, Wiltcher's and othersTertiary and industrial buildings

Energy audits of buildings from 500 to over 100,000 m²

Building owners and operators need to know where their energy goes and which measures to take, and large companies and big consumers must carry out mandatory audits. For more than 20 years ICEDD has audited buildings of every kind in the tertiary sector, from offices, shops and hospitals to care homes, sports centres, swimming pools, schools, hotels and exhibition halls, as well as industrial production and storage halls. Clients include AXA, Hotel Amigo, Wiltcher's, the Centre hospitalier de Mouscron and the Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. ICEDD holds the approvals of the Public Service of Wallonia and Bruxelles Environnement for mandatory large-company audits and big-consumer audits under the Brussels environmental permit.

The Facilitateur URE: a helpdesk for energy in Walloon non-residential buildings

On behalf of the Walloon energy administration, ICEDD has run the Facilitateur URE (rational use of energy) since 1997 to help commercial and non-profit tertiary organisations and public authorities improve the energy performance of their buildings over the long term, in line with the region's 2050 energy goals. The service answers questions through a dedicated helpdesk, advises on construction, technical and technology choices, specifications and the energy side of quotes, carries out energy pre-checks of organisations, runs seminars and visits of exemplary buildings, and explains the rules and the financial aid available.

  • A continuous helpdesk for tertiary organisations and public authorities since 1997
  • Energy pre-checks, technical advice and information on financial aid

SPW ÉnergieTraining

Training energy managers for their own buildings

Organisations need staff who can take charge of every energy question in their buildings, not only the technical side but also energy accounting, communication, awareness, method and finance. For the Walloon energy administration, ICEDD designs and coordinates the Responsable Énergie training: it defines the programme and updates the content for each session, writes much of the course material, handles logistics and contacts with professionals, companies and institutions, and organises the qualifying exams. Participants receive a certificate at the end of the course.

HEFAISTOS: decarbonising high-temperature industrial processes

Funded by the federal Energy Transition Fund, HEFAISTOS assesses to what extent, at what cost and under which technical conditions carbon-neutral high-temperature industrial processes can help balance the Belgian electricity grid and secure supply. With Aperam, Engie-CRIGEN, Engie-Laborelec, VITO and ULB, ICEDD maps high-temperature processes in Belgium and the low-carbon technologies that can serve them, assesses the supply risks of importing green molecules (hydrogen, ammonia, e-methane, methanol), updates the Belgian TIMES energy model, and tests the findings in a technical and economic feasibility study at Aperam's Châtelet site. The project runs from 2024 to 2026.

  • A feasibility study confronting the analysis with real industrial constraints at Aperam Châtelet
  • Technical, economic and policy recommendations for public decision-makers and industry
