Go Ocean

Carbon RemovalAdvisory & Training

Go Ocean is a Ghent company that funds and follows up marine and coastal restoration worldwide, from oyster reefs in the Belgian North Sea and seagrass in Scotland to mangroves and coral reefs. Each company is matched with a project close to its value chain, through blue carbon credits or direct funding, and follows its impact on a dashboard.

About Go Ocean

Go Ocean was born from the success of Go Forest and works as its sister company from the same Ghent office, with the same focus on integrity and transparency; the company was registered in 2024 and was co-founded by Marte Greefs (Sea-EO) and Sarah Parent. It restores the building blocks of a healthy ocean, such as coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass meadows and oyster reefs, and also supports nature-based solutions still in an experimental phase so they can later be scaled up. Projects run with local partners, including Seawilding in Scotland, Belreefs and DEME in the Belgian North Sea, Sea Ranger Service in the Eastern Scheldt, Jan De Nul in Ecuador's Guayas River Delta, Bôndy in Madagascar, Project Laut in Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation in Australia. Companies can buy blue carbon credits, fund a specific project with biodiversity and carbon data for their reporting, or use restoration for team engagement, employer branding and communication. Partners include KPMG, AstraZeneca, Umicore, Elia Group, Luminus, Renewi, Komatsu and ZOUTMAN, and the Antwerp-based Naiad Foundation has committed €750,000 over five years.

What Go Ocean has delivered

UmicoreMaterials technology

Restoring a coral reef with local communities

With field partner Project Laut, Umicore funds the restoration of a 270 m² rubble patch along the coast of Nusa Penida, Indonesia: 500 coral spiders, each carrying 16 coral fragments of mixed species, placed over 12 months in 2024. The reef work is paired with Hawksbill sea turtle identification, since fewer turtles means more sponges competing with corals, and every month local school children join a restoration day. Reports and photos are uploaded monthly to Umicore's impact dashboard.

Naiad FoundationPhilanthropy

A five-year commitment to blue carbon and biodiversity

The Antwerp-based Naiad Foundation started a long-term partnership with Go Ocean in 2024. In the first two years, about half of the yearly budget restores seagrass meadows in Scotland and funds research into their biodiversity benefits and carbon potential, around 35% goes to oyster, mussel and tube worm reefs in the Belgian and Dutch North Sea, and the rest to community-led restoration in the Global South. The foundation also joins Go Ocean's field trip for business leaders to Scotland.

ZOUTMANSea salt

Oyster reefs in the Belgian North Sea for a sea salt producer

For ZOUTMAN, the sea supplies its most essential raw material. Through its partnership with Go Ocean, the Roeselare salt producer supports ocean restoration worldwide and, closer to home, flat oyster reef restoration in the Belgian North Sea, where natural reefs filter the water and act as nurseries for fish and other marine life. The partnership is part of ZOUTMAN's step-by-step plan towards climate neutrality by 2047.

BMW De MeyCar dealership

Seagrass planted for every electric car sold

With dealerships on the Belgian coast, BMW De Mey felt a direct link with Go Ocean's mission. It supports two projects: ecoblocks in the North Sea, on which marine organisms settle more easily than on traditional concrete blocks, and seagrass meadows in Scotland, which store CO₂. It started with a donation of 63 bundles of seagrass and adds more with every electric BMW it sells.

LAGOLeisure

Turning every visitor into ocean impact

The LAGO swimming paradise group funds coral restoration in Indonesia's Coral Triangle in line with its footfall. Posters in the pools and offices, coral restoration videos on the screens and ocean-themed days explain the initiative to visitors, and staff and their families took part in a beach clean-up in Bredene led by Go Ocean partner Proper Strandlopers.
