Energy & BuildingsMobility & CommutingScope 1Scope 2

Futech is a solar installer from Tessenderlo, founded by engineers in 2008. It designs, installs and maintains solar panels, battery storage and EV charging for companies, from a small SME roof to a large industrial hall, and can finance the installation itself so the company simply buys the solar power at a reduced rate.

About Futech

Futech was founded in 2008 by engineers with a passion for green energy. Founder and CEO Ismaël Ben-Al-Lal studied engineering at Group T in Leuven and, in 2007, raced more than 3,000 km across Australia in a self-built solar car with the Leuven team that took silver at the World Solar Challenge. Today Futech is headquartered in Tessenderlo, has branches in Evergem, Merkem (Houthulst) and Mouscron, works across Flanders, and counts more than 10,000 customers, both households and companies such as Verano, Truckstop 26 bis, Gobo, Indupol, Medical Logistics and KV Mechelen. It works as an engineering firm rather than a pure installer: every project starts with an on-site energy analysis, every panel is tested against its own QC Futech specification before installation, and Futech Service monitors production remotely and inspects industrial installations every year. Its products come from sister company iLumen (PIDbox, iLubat battery, iLucharge chargers, iLusmart energy management). Futech was one of the industry partners in the EU Horizon 2020 CIRCUSOL project on circular solar business models, where it put second-life electric vehicle batteries to work next to an existing solar park.

What Futech has delivered

Hubo Zonhoven (Groep Heeren)Retail

Solar, second-life storage and fast charging without a new grid cabin

Groep Heeren, which runs about twenty Hubo DIY stores, wanted its Zonhoven store to become one of the most sustainable retail sites in Limburg. A new regular grid cabin would have meant a high cost, more than a year of waiting and a higher capacity tariff. Futech was the only bidder to propose a combination of solar panels, batteries and chargers that kept the existing connection: 1,890 solar panels, a battery system built from second-life electric car batteries, and 10 charging points including two fast chargers open to local residents. A single iLusmart control buys grid power only when it is cheap and keeps the capacity tariff down. The same approach is being rolled out to the Hubo stores in Tessenderlo, Hasselt, Bree and Pelt.

Truckstop 26 bisTruck parking & services

A 2 MW solar carport over a truck park, with no upfront investment

Truckstop 26 bis in Heusden-Zolder runs a secure truck park, a restaurant, meeting rooms and, since 2017, an EV charging station. Since 2012 the whole site runs on green power from a Futech solar park of more than 7,000 panels built as a canopy over the truck parking. Under a service agreement Futech owns the park for 20 years and handles maintenance, while Truckstop pays a monthly fee for the power, well below the cost of grid electricity. In 2021, within the EU CIRCUSOL project, Futech added a battery system made of second-life automotive batteries so more of the solar power is used on site instead of being exported at low prices. The battery was added to the existing service agreement.

Medical LogisticsHealthcare logistics

Solar and storage for a near CO₂-neutral logistics service

Medical Logistics in Mechelen provides tailored logistics to medical distributors and stores goods in conditioned rooms cooled and heated with heat pumps. It wanted to make that service close to CO₂-neutral at no extra cost for its customers. Futech analysed the site's total consumption and installed 45 solar panels (14.2 kWp) with a PIDbox to raise yield and an iLubat battery to store the surplus. Production and consumption are followed daily with Futech's monitoring tools. The company's stated target is to cover 90% of its energy needs with this investment.

KV MechelenSport

Solar power on the main stand of a Pro League stadium

The Jupiler Pro League football club wanted to lead the way towards a more sustainable future, in line with the City of Mechelen's climate policy. Futech installed more than 200 solar panels on the main stand of the AFAS stadium, fitted with PIDbox technology from sister company iLumen, which raises the yield of the panels and extends their life. The club sees the installation as the first step of a wider plan that also includes a more fuel-efficient team bus and alternatives to plastic cups.

What customers say

Filip Wautelet,Managing director, Medical Logistics
