A Belgian data centre that helps balance the grid
Google's data centre in Belgium is one of the country's largest electricity consumers, and the Belgian grid needs ever more flexibility as wind and solar output varies. Since 2020, Centrica Energy and Google have worked together so that the site's on-site battery storage system supports grid stability through Centrica's virtual power plant, which acts as Balancing Service Provider for the grid operator. The partnership has since been extended to Google's IT load-based demand response: when the Belgian grid is under pressure, Google shifts non-urgent computing tasks to other times and locations. Centrica's own optimisation algorithm dispatches the battery and the IT load flexibility together, and every activation is shared transparently with Google.
