IJO

Sustainable ITAdvisory & TrainingScope 2Scope 3

IJO is a French Green IT consultancy that helps IT departments and tech companies measure the carbon footprint of their digital activities, set a climate trajectory and cut emissions through responsible IT purchasing, GreenOps and training. Part of the Elée group, it works from Paris, Toulouse, Rennes and Geneva.

About IJO

IJO was founded in 2020 and is part of Elée, an independent French consultancy specialised in software and cloud spend. Its team of more than 25 people works from Paris La Défense, Toulouse, Rennes and Geneva for large companies, public bodies and international mid-sized groups, including OVHcloud, SPIE, Airbus, OP Mobility, APRIL, Crédit Agricole, DB Schenker and the French Ministry for the Ecological Transition. All its consultants are trained in Bilan Carbone, the GHG Protocol and regulatory GHG reporting, and an in-house R&D team keeps improving its IT emission factor database, backed by CDP climate data on electronics, software and telecom companies. IJO also audits and certifies carbon calculators, such as those of OVHcloud and SPIE ICS. Its training is Qualiopi certified, its trainers facilitate La Fresque du Climat and La Fresque du Numérique, and its IJO Learning platform offers 50 courses and 100 videos in SCORM format for any LMS.

What IJO has delivered

APRILInsurance

Putting a figure on the carbon footprint of an insurer's IT

APRIL, a major French insurance group, had already done an organisational carbon footprint. In 2024 its CSR and IT teams wanted a clear, quantified view of the IT share to guide future decisions. IJO followed the GHG Protocol, as APRIL wanted an international standard aligned with the CSRD, collected existing data, documented every assumption and ran workshops with both teams. The scope covered IT equipment (workstations, infrastructure, networks), IT services (telecoms, SaaS, cloud hosting), client portal connections and some external services. Equipment, mainly its manufacture, came out as the largest item, with IT services also significant, and more than 30 reduction levers were ranked by carbon impact and feasibility, from CSR criteria in IT tenders to refurbished equipment and data rationalisation.

Measuring the IT footprint of 400,000 assets worldwide

A major international pharmaceutical group needed to measure the carbon impact of an IT estate spread across the world, where location, equipment type and lifetime were often missing or inconsistent in the CMDB. After a successful proof of concept, the Aguaro tool, connected to ServiceNow, was rolled out. IJO started with Scope 2 IT emissions, mapped every emission source (workstations, shared equipment, data centres, cloud, networks, third-party services), assessed data quality and built a calculation model combining asset inventory, usage scenarios and emission factors. More than 30 automated data sources now feed it, and workshops prepared the teams for the next measurement rounds and the move to Scope 3.

Auditing and certifying a cloud carbon calculator

OVHcloud had launched a carbon footprint calculator for its Bare Metal and Hosted Private Cloud products, so customers can report the emissions of the services they buy. IJO checked that its method was consistent with Bilan Carbone and the GHG Protocol, audited the calculations, simulated scenarios to test the results and covered points without precedent in its earlier audits, such as server refurbishment and the effect of each data centre's location on the energy mix. It also advised on how to present results to customers and on future work to anticipate their requests.

  • Calculation method validated against the main carbon accounting standards
  • Recommendations on how results are shown to customers
  • Certification letter supporting customer reporting on HPC and Bare Metal products

Ministère de la Transition écologiquePublic sector

Specifying a public tool to measure the footprint of information systems

As part of its digital and environment roadmap, the French Ministry for the Ecological Transition wanted a long-term tool to measure the environmental footprint of all the infrastructure and applications it runs, and to share it with other public bodies. In 2022 IJO wrote the methodological specifications, with Sopra Steria as technical developer: calculation rules based on Bilan Carbone and the GHG Protocol, then data collection across data centres, digital workplace, networks and support services. The result is NumEcoEval, an open-source tool built on Apache Superset that measures the impact of each part of an IT estate, tracks it over time and simulates the effect of a decision.

  • Datasets collected across the ministry's IT scopes
  • A working open-source calculation tool, NumEcoEval
  • Impacts tracked over time and decisions simulated before they are taken

SPIE ICSIT services

Certifying the carbon simulator built into IT quotes

SPIE ICS added a carbon footprint simulator to its quoting tool, so customers can see the environmental impact of the hardware and services they plan to buy. In 2022 IJO reviewed the method behind it: a demonstration to set the scope, working sessions with SPIE ICS teams to understand the calculations, scenario simulations, then a methodology review with strengths, areas for improvement and advice on presenting results to buyers new to the topic.

  • Detailed methodology review of the simulator
  • Certification letter confirming it meets the Bilan Carbone® method
  • Carbon information given to customers at the moment they buy

OP MobilityAutomotive

From an IT carbon footprint to a group action plan

OP Mobility (formerly Plastic Omnium) launched its carbon reduction programme in 2019, driven by its CSR department, with a first carbon footprint that same year. IJO then measured the carbon footprint of the group's IT for 2022 on a broad scope (collective workplace, data centres and servers, networks, services), leaving out machine controls such as IoT that sit at the edge of the IT department's remit. The resulting action plan was organised into operational streams: circular IT with recycling and more recycled materials, more energy-efficient data centres, and a network of internal ambassadors.

  • IT carbon footprint for 2022 on a broad scope
  • Action plan split into circular IT, efficient data centres and internal mobilisation
  • A network of sustainability ambassadors across the group
